Spend some Friday evening designing and printing a spiked locking collar
I recently acquired a Bambu Lab P1S and was disappointed by the lack of functional locking collars, so a Friday evening project turned into a basic locking collar with some multi-color accents (and a few more evenings). Heavily inspired by existing designs, two halves, a hinge at the back, and full assembly without needing to go to the hardware store. Not Print-in-Place, I prefer smaller parts so I don't have too much waste if the printer messes up.
I initially started with a simple oval ring and decided to add sharp elements inside for discomfort, but they are barely noticeable, even though they look intimidating. Then played around with some decoration for a few spikes.
I haven't done a lot of CAD design before this, so I'm quite happy with the result. Wish I had another design for the locking tabs, since it annoys me that I need a separate shim piece, but without it a loose padlock would lead to a slight gap where skin could get pinched. Printing requires some manual support adjustments. Bambu Studio likes to place supports in lots of places where they are not needed, like in the spike holes or the channel where the hinge pin goes into. Had to manually paint no-support zones and restrict supports to the print plate.
I definitely want to experiment with a more integrated locking mechanism. The prints I did were surprisingly strong when closed (using 20% infill). Not sure where to go beyond that.
